With a chance to control their own destiny and earn their first ACC Championship Game berth since 2013 (FSU), Duke entered the final three games of its schedule — including two at home against UVA, UNC, and Wake Forest — with everything to play for. Instead, the Blue Devils failed yet another test against a ranked opponent, adding more doubt and uncertainty to an already underwhelming season.
By all internal and external measures, Duke was expected to compete for an ACC title this year, boasting strong talent along both lines of scrimmage, veteran leadership, and multiple NFL-caliber players. Yet with only two games remaining, the Blue Devils are still searching for an offensive identity and even basic bowl eligibility.

Back-to-back losses — first to UConn and now a 34–17 home defeat that saw fans leaving Wallace Wade Stadium late in the third quarter — have left many questioning the program’s direction. Concerns have centered around predictable offensive playcalling, with an explosive passing attack repeatedly reduced to screen plays on critical downs. On defense, questionable schemes have contributed to the unit surrendering more than 30 points per game across the last three contests (Clemson, UConn, UVA).
Even accounting for injuries and missing contributors — including Terry Moore, who was expected to play a major role in Manny Diaz’s defense — both coordinators have significantly underperformed.
Still seeking their sixth win, the Blue Devils never expected to be sitting at 5–5 through 10 games.
Much will depend on how they close the season at UNC on Saturday and against Wake Forest in the home finale. Regardless of how the final stretch unfolds, this team faces a long offseason of soul-searching — and possibly changes within the coaching staff.
