Transfers entering a new regime under a new system and personnel can often take time to pick up speed, regardless of who is the opponent. What we witnessed during the Duke Blue Devils home opening 45-17 win over Elon Thursday night was quite the sample size of what is on the horizon.
Led by Tulane transfer Darian Mensah, who not only completed his final 14 passes, finishing with 389 yards, to 3 touchdowns, but sentiments of not being complacent was the rhetoric.
" Not a bad day in the office to start the season off; we could have executed a higher level in the first half, I was clean all night, got the ball to 9 different receivers"
From a receiving standpoint, Harvard Grad Cooper Barkate showed why he's received so much recognition in the offseason for his potential finishing with 5 receptions for 117 yards. Sophomore speedster Que'Sean Brown rallied 6 catches for 93 yards but the highlight came late in the contest with a 78 yard punt return touchdown to silence the Phoenix of Elon.
Transfer Andrel Anthony finished with 51 yards including his first touchdown in over a year after a devastating lower body injury last season.
Sahmir Hagans capped off his senior campaign with 5 receptions, 54 yards including 2 touchdowns. The senior will be asked alongside Harvard transfer Cooper Barkate to bring a young receiving group up to speed against some talented secondaries starting with Illinois next Saturday for ESPN's signature noon game of the week.
Stay tuned today for more update live from Duke's media coaching session taking place at 1pm.
